As the capital city of the Catalonia Region in the Kingdom of Spain, Barcelona is a proud city with a rich history dating back to its time when it was founded as a Roman colony. With 5.3 million people in the metro area, Barcelona is the 6th most populous city in the European Union and is extremely influential in the areas of commerce, education, arts and entertainment. It is a worldly, global city and in many ways acts as a gateway city into the rest of Europe.
The Need is Great
A rising population that declares itself atheists along with an aging and declining population of self-described Catholics means that the religious climate is changing rapidly within this great city. As the world also becomes increasingly global in its population and more internationals move into the great cities of the world, Barcelona is more and more becoming a home to expats who live in the city because large international corporations have a headquarter within the city. And because English is still the largest unifying language within Europe, what we see is an opportunity for an English-speaking church plant to take root and have a large impact for the Kingdom of God.
One of the most important things our feasibility team pointed out in their research and interviews is a need for a church planting team to have a open line of communication and relationship with the existing Christian churches and organizations already present within the city. These relationships are of vital importance in a culture that values the existing organizations and looks with skepticism on new religious ventures. These existing churches can also provide a level of support and friendship to a new church plant as well as the possibility of providing meeting space for the church to worship in.
The need for an English-speaking church is great within Barcelona as virtually every church planting expedition to this point has used the strategy of being multilingual and targeting Spaniards as well as internationals. We truly believe there is a space within the culture to target English-speaking internationals in order to spread the Gospel in a city where the old traditions are quickly dying and the rise of intellectual atheism is taking over the younger generations.
We Need You
As we seek to take the Gospel into this ancient city there are a few things that we ask you to pray for:
- A church planting team that sees the need for an English-speaking church in the city of Barcelona. The research done on this city shows that little to no work has been done targeting the English speaking population within Barcelona so we know the opportunity is there to reach this people group for the Kingdom.
- Cooperation and unity with existing churches. There is a strong cultural need and expectation that any new church planting venture would reach out for the approval and cooperation of the existing Spanish churches. While we value cooperation in our efforts to share the Gospel we pray that these churches would be open to new strategies and opportunities to spread the Gospel in unique ways.
- That the Holy Spirit prepare the way. Barcelona provides many unique obstacles for an English-speaking church plant including the government, cost of living and finding a place to worship. Pray that the Holy Spirit prepares the way and opens many doors for the Gospel to ignite within Barcelona.
